Video Subtitles

Learn Hebrew from videos with highlighted subtitles

Watch YouTube, Netflix and StreamIsrael with Hebrew subtitles that show which words you know, track your comprehension, and detect i+1 sentences.

Overview

The subtitle browser transforms Hebrew video content into an interactive learning experience. Subtitles appear with word and sentence level highlighting based on your Anki progress, and you can navigate between subtitles using keyboard shortcuts.

Word Highlighting

Every Hebrew word in subtitles is color-coded: green (mature), orange (learning), purple (potentially known), red (unknown)

Comprehension Stats

Real-time percentage showing how much of the video's vocabulary you know

i+1 Detection

Automatically highlights subtitle sentences with exactly one unknown word

Keyboard Navigation

Jump between subtitles with arrow keys: ← previous, → next, ↓ repeat

Multi-Subtitle Cards

Shift+Click to select a range of consecutive subtitles and create a single card with combined text and audio

AI Translation

  • How to Use

    1

Open a Video with Hebrew Subtitles

Navigate to YouTube or Netflix and play a video that has Hebrew subtitles available.

The subtitle browser sidebar will open on the right side of the screen.

    2

    View Highlighted Subtitles

As the video plays, you'll see:

    • Overlay subtitle - Large text at bottom of video with highlighting
    • Sidebar subtitles - Scrollable list of all subtitles with timestamps
    • Comprehension percentage - Shows what % of words you know
    • i+1 sentence count - Number of optimal learning sentences
    • Potential i+1 sentence count - Number of sentences which may be i+1 and are worth reviewing.
    3

    Navigate with Keyboard or Mouse

Use arrow keys to control subtitle navigation:

    • Jump to previous subtitle
    • Jump to next subtitle
    • Repeat current subtitle (jump to start)

The video will jump to the timestamp of the selected subtitle. You can also click a subtitle in the browser to jump to that subtitle.

    4

    Create Anki Cards from Subtitles

Single subtitle: Shift+Click any subtitle to open the card creator with that sentence and its audio pre-filled.

Multiple subtitles: Shift+Click a subtitle to set it as the starting point (it highlights with an amber border), then Shift+Click another subtitle to combine the range into a single card — the text and audio will span all selected subtitles.

    • Shift+Click the same subtitle twice to cancel the selection and create a single-subtitle card instead
    • Regular click while a selection is active cancels it
    5

    Translate Subtitles to English

Click the Translate button in the sidebar header to translate all subtitles using Claude AI. Requires a Claude API key set in Settings.

    • English translations appear in italic below each Hebrew subtitle in the sidebar
    • A blurred English overlay appears beneath the Hebrew subtitle on the video — click it or press E to reveal
    • The overlay re-blurs automatically on each new subtitle, so you can try to understand first before peeking
    • Translations are cached for 7 days per episode, so re-opening the same video is instant and free
    • Use Hide Translation / Show Translation to toggle translations on and off
