How to Use

1

Hold Shift and Hover

Hold down the Shift key and hover your mouse over any Hebrew word on a webpage.

Tip: Works on any website with Hebrew textβ€”news sites, Wikipedia, social media, anywhere!
2

View Word Information

A popup will appear showing:

  • Word β€” the Hebrew word with a πŸ”Š button to hear it pronounced
  • Definition β€” English translation from the built-in dictionary if available
  • Frequency Rank β€” how common the word is (lower = more common)
  • Verb Info β€” if the word is a conjugated verb, returns the infinitive and a Pealim link
  • Custom Note β€” your personal definition if you've added one
  • External Lookup Buttons β€” one-click lookups from Pealim, Reverso, or Google Translate
3

Add Custom Definition (Optional)

Click "Add Custom Definition" in the popup to add your own translation or note for the word.

Definitions are saved to your SSH Custom Definitions Anki deck and cached locally. They're available across all pages immediately, and sync to other devices automatically via AnkiWeb.

4

Create Anki Card, Mark as Known, or Ignore

If you want to add the word to your Anki deck, click the "Create Card" button in the popup to open the card creator with the word pre-filled.

If you already know the word, click "Mark as Already Known". This adds it to the Already Known deck in Anki (tagged ssh-known) and registers it as known immediately.

If the word is noise β€” transliterations, names, gibberish β€” click "Ignore Word". This adds it to the Ignored deck (tagged ssh-ignored), removing it from highlighting and i+1 detection entirely.

Optional: ElevenLabs Pronunciation

The πŸ”Š play button in the dictionary popup uses ElevenLabs for high-quality Hebrew TTS. Without it, the browser's built-in speech engine is used as a fallback (quality varies).

Setting Up ElevenLabs

  1. Create a free account at elevenlabs.io β€” the free tier is enough for casual use
  2. Go to elevenlabs.io/app/developers/api-keys and create a key
  3. Open the extension settings and paste it into ElevenLabs API Key
  4. Optionally choose a Voice ID and model β€” the defaults use a high-quality Hebrew voice
  5. Save settings and click πŸ”Š on any word to test
Tip: ElevenLabs offers a free monthly character quota. For dictionary lookups it goes a very long way β€” most users will stay within the free tier.
